Cette oeuvre est préparatoire au tableau intitulé Les comptes de la journée. Pierre Bonnard dépeint l’un de ces moments de bonheur paisible du quotidien qu’il affectionne particulièrement. Au premier plan, très détaillé, le profil de femme est celui de la domestique représentée à droite de Marthe dans l’oeuvre finale. Elle est attablée, un crayon à la main. L’artiste lui accorde toute son attention : elle bouge, il la regarde, il crayonne, reprend la courbe du bras tout en fixant résolument les ombres et la lumière sur ses épaules et sa chevelure. Au second plan de ce travail figurent également deux profils légèrement esquissés.

This work is preparatory to the painting entitled Les comptes de la journée. Pierre Bonnard depicts one of the peaceful moments of daily life that he is particularly fond of. In the foreground, he draws, with great detail, a woman, in profile, who will be sitting to the left of Marthe in the final work. She is sitting at a table with a pen in her hand, focusing on her task, and the artist is giving her all his attention: she is moving, he is watching her, he is sketching, retracing the curve of her arms, outlining her hair and shoulder with a contrast of light and shadows. There are two more slightly sketched profiles in the background.
